BREAKING: PRAIRIE RIDGE REFORMED CHURCH'S SEEKER-FRIENDLY INITIATIVE ENCOUNTERS ACTUAL SEEKERS

Prairie Ridge Reformed Church's month-long outreach initiative reached a critical inflection point this past Sunday when an estimated four first-time visitors arrived simultaneously, triggering a sequence of events that church leadership has declined to characterize as a failure while also declining to characterize as a success.

The initiative, proposed by Elder Thomas Langley and approved by a 3-2 elder vote in late March, called for simplified sermon language, the removal of select theological vocabulary from bulletin inserts, and what the planning document described as "a warmer greeting culture." Elder Gerald Hoffstead voted against the measure on grounds he described as "foundational" and agreed to observe results before filing a formal objection. He has since filed the objection anyway, as a precaution.

The first complication arose at the welcome table when nine-year greeter Phil Eckert encountered a visitor who asked, upon receiving the weekly Scripture handout, what an ESV was. Mr. Eckert, who has not been asked this question in nine years of service, paused for an estimated eleven seconds before handing the visitor a bulletin and suggesting they "find a comfortable seat." The visitor's follow-up questions were not recorded.

Inside the sanctuary, Pastor Mike Williams delivered what he described in a subsequent elder memo as his "most accessible message to date" — a streamlined thirty-nine minute sermon on John 3 that he noted had been edited for clarity by removing what he called "the denser application sections." Regular attendees, several of whom had completed personal word studies in advance, described the experience as disorienting. Caleb Mercer, who had prepared seven pages of cross-reference notes the previous evening, sat with his notebook closed for the duration and has not discussed it publicly.

The four visitors departed before the fellowship hour. Whether they will return is unknown, as the visitor feedback card initiative was tabled in the same meeting that approved the seeker-friendly strategy.

An emergency committee meeting convened Tuesday evening to determine whether Prairie Ridge had overcorrected, undercorrected, or whether the initiative requires what Elder Langley is calling "recalibration." Elder Hoffstead has indicated he finds the word recalibration insufficient. Elder Hoffstead has suggested different words.

Brandon Keyes was not a member of the committee. He submitted four pages of written comments regardless.

AT PRESS TIME: The feedback card initiative remained tabled. The four visitors had not returned. Elder Hoffstead's formal objection was three pages, single spaced.

DEVELOPING: Pastor Williams has informed the elder board he is prepared to address Sunday's "pastoral gap" with a follow-up series. He has proposed three parts. The projected length of Part One is fifty-four minutes.
