BREAKING: PRAIRIE RIDGE REFORMED BUSINESS MEETING PRODUCES 47-MINUTE PROCEDURAL DEBATE BEFORE THE FIRST AGENDA ITEM IS REACHED

Prairie Ridge Reformed Church convened its annual spring business meeting Tuesday evening to address six items, including the fellowship hall renovation, a proposed mid-week prayer service, and what the agenda listed only as “Miscellaneous Concerns (see attached).” Three hours and fourteen minutes later, the congregation had formally addressed one item and tabled two others — a result Elder Thomas Langley described as “progress” and Elder Gerald Hoffstead described as “procedurally sound.”

The meeting opened at 6:32pm with a motion by Elder Hoffstead to clarify the parliamentary procedure governing how motions could be made regarding agenda items that had not yet been formally introduced. The motion required a second, which took four minutes to obtain, and triggered a seventeen-minute discussion about whether the motion itself needed to appear on the agenda before it could be moved. Pastor Mike Williams offered a pastoral observation during this period that referenced Acts 15 and ran eleven minutes. The congregation was attentive. Two members checked their watches.

The fellowship hall renovation — tabled six times since 2017 and most recently at the 2025 business meeting — was introduced at 8:19pm by Elder Langley, who had prepared a color-coded summary document and what he later described as “a genuinely good slide.” The motion was seconded within seconds, a speed that visibly surprised Elder Langley and led him to briefly lose his place in his notes. Elder Hoffstead requested the floor to discuss whether the motion, as worded, was sufficiently specific to warrant a vote. The resulting discussion ran thirty-nine minutes. The renovation was tabled at 8:58pm pending subcommittee review. Elder Langley’s expression, this reporter noted, was that of a man who has learned to lose gracefully while still absolutely keeping count.

The “Miscellaneous Concerns” attachment — three pages, single-spaced, submitted anonymously — was neither read aloud nor entered into the record. Elder Hoffstead confirmed it had been received. He declined to elaborate on its contents. Brandon Keyes, who was not a voting member, submitted a written request to join the subcommittee. His request is under review.

Caleb Mercer attended the meeting and took notes. He did not speak, as Elder Hoffstead had advised before the meeting that first-time attendees were encouraged to “observe and learn the culture.” Caleb’s notebook contained fourteen pages of observations. He has not shared them with anyone.

AT PRESS TIME: The subcommittee for the fellowship hall renovation had not yet been formed, as its formation requires a motion at the next business meeting. Elder Langley had no comment.

DEVELOPING: The Dispatch has confirmed that Elder Hoffstead has added a new item to the June business meeting agenda. The item is listed as “Worship Music Standards: A Preliminary Framework Discussion.” No further details are available. Brandon Keyes was reached for comment. He had quite a bit to say.
