ALERT: Christian Man's 'Accountability Partner' Just Friend Who Gets Weekly Sin Reports

A Prairie Ridge resident's eighteen-month accountability partnership has come under scrutiny this week following a series of disclosures that have raised questions about the nature, structure, and theological integrity of the arrangement.

Caleb Mercer, 25, established the partnership with childhood friend and fellow church attendee Ryan Doss in October of last year, citing a sermon on Proverbs 27:17 and what he described to this reporter as "a serious commitment to growing in sanctification the right way." Mr. Doss, 26, who works in HVAC and has no formal theological training, confirmed he agreed to the arrangement after Caleb described it as "basically just getting coffee and talking."

Both accounts are technically accurate.

Weekly sessions, held Thursdays at 7am at a local establishment, have followed a consistent format in which Mr. Mercer presents a structured confession of the week's spiritual struggles, organized by category, and Mr. Doss responds. A review of the arrangement reveals that Mr. Doss's responses have consisted primarily of nodding, saying "yeah man," and on at least six occasions, "I'll be praying for you," which Mr. Doss confirmed he intended sincerely while acknowledging he could not always recall the specific prayer request by the following Thursday.

The arrangement deteriorated this week when Mr. Mercer discovered that several of his disclosed struggles had been circulated within a men's prayer chain as unattributed prayer requests. The requests were specific enough that at least three recipients correctly identified the source. The prayer chain in question is moderated by Brandon Keyes, who confirmed to the Dispatch that he "only shared what seemed genuinely urgent" and noted that confidentiality had not been "explicitly established in writing."

Mr. Mercer declined to comment on the status of the partnership. Mr. Doss also declined to comment, adding that he "didn't really know it was an official thing." Mr. Keyes offered fourteen minutes of additional comment, none of which the Dispatch has elected to print at this time.

Elder Hoffstead, asked whether the church had a formal accountability framework in place, stated that accountability was a matter of personal and covenantal seriousness and that he would not be elaborating further. This is consistent with Elder Hoffstead's position on most things.

Caleb Mercer was seen at Wednesday evening Bible study. He sat in the back row. He did not bring his notebook.

AT PRESS TIME: Brandon Keyes had added two new items to the Thursday prayer chain. Their origin was not disclosed. Their specificity was noted by recipients.

DEVELOPING: Elder Hoffstead has scheduled a private meeting with Caleb Mercer for next Tuesday. The stated agenda is "a pastoral conversation." It is the first time Elder Hoffstead has initiated a meeting with Caleb Mercer in eight months of requests. The circumstances of the scheduling have not been confirmed.
